PhD in Biology

Modern biology is written at the intersection of the laboratory and fundamental knowledge. At UVVG, a PhD in Biology means applied molecular research, access to the Institute of Life Sciences, and supervision by researchers with international visibility—for questions that matter and answers that endure.

PhD supervisors

The field of Biology is supported by a team of researchers with expertise in molecular biology, neurobiology, and biotechnologies, with publications in leading journals and active international collaborations.

Conduct of studies

The PhD programme in Biology lasts 3 years (6 semesters) and includes two mandatory components: the Advanced University Training Programme and the Scientific Research Programme.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The advanced training programme is delivered within the Doctoral School of Biology, based on a curriculum endorsed by CSUD and approved by the Senate. Completion of the programme ensures the award of 30 ECTS credits in a single semester. The compulsory courses provide a coherent approach to scientific research and competencies in leveraging results, research ethics, and biostatistics.

Compulsory courses:

Scientific research methodology

Scientific research ethics

Designing and writing a scientific paper

Statistical processing of experimental data

Semester 1 concludes with the development of the Scientific Research Programme Project—a document that defines the doctoral topic, objectives, methodology, and the schedule of planned activities. The topic is established by mutual agreement between the PhD supervisor and the doctoral student, aligned with the area of expertise and UVVG’s strategy.

Graduates of research Master’s programmes hosted by the Doctoral School may have the compulsory courses recognised as equivalent, upon request submitted to the Doctoral School Council.

The research programme is organised individually for each doctoral student by the PhD supervisor. Research activity is assessed through three reports presented before the guidance committee:

Report 1 (sem. 2): Bibliographic report—the current state of knowledge in the field for the specific doctoral topic

Report 2 (sem. 3): Interim research results

Report 3 (sem. 4): Interim research results

Assessment is based on the following grades: very good · good · satisfactory · unsatisfactory. The interval between two consecutive presentations may not exceed 12 months. At each presentation, the PhD supervisor and at least 2 members of the guidance committee must be present.

The research programme concludes with the preparation and public defence of the doctoral thesis.

SDB periodically organises specialist conferences with UVVG’s international collaborators, to which all doctoral students are invited, regardless of the programme stage—optional trainings explicitly mentioned in the individual training plan.

The public defenses of doctoral theses and habilitation works are open to the academic community and are announced on the university website at least 15 days in advance.

UVVG PhD students have access to their own research infrastructure and international databases through the university’s institutional subscriptions.
