Vasile Goldiș Western University of Arad

Cultural Heritage

A university does not thrive solely through its lecture halls. UVVG manages four unique cultural sites in Arad – open to both the community and students.

Cultural Heritage

Vasile Goldiș Western University of Arad is both an academic institution and a custodian of truly remarkable cultural and natural values. Each of the sites below reflects UVVG’s commitment to the Arad community: education, memory, art, and nature under the same institutional roof.

Macea University Botanical Garden

Member of the Association of Botanical Gardens in Romania, Macea commune, Arad County. Arad

Located in the heart of the Macea commune, with one side of its perimeter facing outward, the “Vasile Goldiș” Western University Botanical Garden covers 21.5 hectares and serves as a teaching and research base for students and academic staff of the relevant faculties. The Garden is a member of the Association of Botanical Gardens in Romania and houses a remarkable collection of plant species, with an emphasis on woody flora—reflecting the ongoing focus of the specialist staff. Woody species predominate, as the Garden staff’s efforts have been directed in this regard. Visitors can discover both native species from Romania’s flora and species brought from distant botanical regions, harmoniously integrated into a landscape with both educational and contemplative value.

Art Collection “Doina and Barițu Arghezi Donation”

650+ pieces, permanent exhibition

Through the partnership between the “Vasile Goldiș” University Foundation and the “Doina and Barițu T. Arghezi” Cultural Foundation, Arad has been enriched with an exceptional venue of universal art and culture. The collection houses representative pieces of decorative art from the 16th century to the present day, from Europe to China. The donation includes pieces from the most varied genres: silk carpets, period furniture, glass objects—Bohemian crystal, Murano, opalines—porcelain and faience from renowned manufacturers: Sèvres, Meissen, Limoges, Rosenthal. The paintings belong to French, Romanian, and Swiss schools, executed in various techniques: oil, watercolor, engraving, gouache. The silverware comprises over 150 pieces—trays, candlesticks, mugs, glasses, boxes—originating from Austrian, French, German, and British workshops. Through its heritage value, the collection can stand alongside the great art collections of Romania, such as the Museum of Collections in Bucharest or the Cuza Palace. The entire donation of over 650 pieces was received with cultural openness by the leadership of the “Vasile Goldiș” University of the West in Arad, which provided the necessary exhibition spaces.

Art Collection “Vasile Goldiș” Memorial Museum

6 Vasile Goldiș St., Arad – the “Românul” Palace

Inaugurated on November 30, 2003, in the presence of the President of Romania, in front of the “Românul” Palace—where the editorial office of the newspaper Românul and the “Concordia” printing institute, led by Vasile Goldiș, once operated—the museum brings together largely unpublished documents and objects belonging to the principal ideologist of the Great Union. The curatorial approach follows a postmodern paradigm: not a simple evocation, but a re-actualization of a historical time, through the reconstruction of period-specific spaces—a dining room, an editorial office—and the display of documents in individually lit showcases, with outstanding graphic presentation. The collection includes educational records (transcripts, diplomas), personal documents (passport, military booklet), extensive correspondence with prominent figures of the time, original period photographs, publications led by Goldiș, and books bearing his signature. Since its opening, the museum’s rooms have become an educational and cultural landmark of Arad, visited by pupils and students. Periodically, the spaces host presentation sessions, press conferences, and cultural competitions.
